Alfred Eugene Hollenberg MD

RICHMOND, Ind. – Alfred Eugene Hollenberg MD of Richmond, IN passed away on September 20, 2010 at Reid Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. He died from complications of leukemia while surrounded by his family. Dr. Hollenberg was among the last of the family doctors who cared for patients from birth to death. Dr. Hollenberg was born on November 24, 1923 to Fred and Nora Hollenberg, missionaries for the Church of the Brethren serving at that time in India, where he spent the first four years of his life. In his youth, his family lived in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Modesto California, and Sebring Florida where he graduated from high school. While attending college at Manchester College in North Manchester IN, he met Donna Lee Teach, of Brookville, OH. They were married in 1948 by her father, Rev. Roy B. Teach. Dr. Hollenberg graduated from medical school at Indiana University in 1951. During WWII, Al was a conscientious objector. In the Korean War, he was drafted and again served in alternative service as a doctor at the Jicarilla Apache Indian reservation in northern New Mexico. His first private practice was in Hollansburg, OH in 1953 before moving to Hagerstown in 1955. He was affiliated for many years with Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle before switching to Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Dr. Hollenberg was an active member of the Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown for many years, then again at the Richmond Church of the Brethren on West Main Street. He was a long time member of the Hagerstown Rotary Club. He served a term as Chief-of-Staff at both Henry County and Reid Hospitals. He then served as Director of Emergency Services at Reid Hospital from 1984 to 1991 when he then retired to Friends Fellowship. He enjoyed gardening, electronics and fishing as his hobbies. He and Donna were jointly honored as Citizens of the Year by the Hagerstown Lions Club in 1983; Dr. Hollenberg received the Rhoades Humanity in Medicine Award from Reid Hospital in 1986. Dr. Hollenberg is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna; daughters Krista Hollenberg-Cussen (husband Kim) of Bloomington IN, Joy Hollenberg Jaske (special friend Jamie Tuttle) of Scottsdale AZ, and Leah Anderson (husband Mark) of Pleasanton CA; sons Dan Hollenberg (wife Paula) of Economy, Bennett Hollenberg MD of Charlotte NC, and Kent Hollenberg (wife Debbie) of Hagerstown; grandchildren Derek and Dylan Hollenberg, Alan Jaske, Hayley Hollenberg and Gavin, Claire and Elise Anderson; step-grandchildren Abbey Glover and baby Millie (husband Grady), Mitch McCullum, Bradley and Matt Cussen; sister Marcia Hamer of Berkley CA; brother Edward Hollenberg MD (wife Jean) of Winamac IN; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for Alfred will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, September 26 with visitation 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Richmond Church of the Brethren, 1 Southwest 17th Street, Richmond followed by a procession and graveside service at the Brick Cemetery in Hagerstown.
