Darrell Glen Smith

RICHMOND, Ind. – Darrell Glen Smith, age 58, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 5, 2013, after an accidental death. Born August 29, 1954, in New Castle, Indiana, to Glen Osby and Willoudene Mercer Smith, he lived in this area for most of his life. Darrell was a 1972 graduate of Rushville High School. He also was a graduate of the F.A.A. Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma City. Darrell was a retired Air Traffic Controller and an Electronic Technician. He was an avid cyclist. Darrell was very involved with the church bus ministry at Hillcrest Baptist Church where he had attended church for 22 years, helping thousands of children. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and son. Survivors include his parents, Glen and Willoudene Smith of Williams, Indiana; sister, Marcia Roll of New Castle; and eight children, Stephen E. Fleming of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Janelle R. (Daniel) Miner of Evansville, Indiana, William V. (Emily) Policella of Marshall, Michigan, Daryl G. (Susan) Jones of Carmel, Indiana, Trina J. (Jason) Summers of Glenville, Georgia, Bryana F. (J.D.) Hasz of Wilmington, Ohio, David M. (Angelica) Smith of Huntsville, Alabama, and Kevin W. (Rachel) Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana. He also leaves behind 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; a niece, Jodie (Jason) Lorton of New Castle; two great-nieces; a great-nephew; and Margaret Smith of Williamsburg. He was loved and adored by all and will be greatly missed as he goes home to be with his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Coy and Mallie Smith and maternal grandparents, Sam and Gertrude Mercer. Visitation for Darrell Glen Smith will be from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2013, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3469 Hillcrest Road, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Dr. Martin Holman officiating. Burial will be in Lewisville Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
