Donald L. Hoover

RICHMOND, Ind. – Donald L. Hoover, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at his home, 2030 Chester Blvd. He was born July 5, 1926, in Richmond and has been a lifelong resident. Don was the son of Lawrence and Bernece Juday Hoover. He was a graduate of the Richmond High School, class of 1944. Don was a member of the high school golf team, Hi-Y and played oboe in the concert band, also playing piano and drums. He volunteered and served in the Navy in World War II. Don worked for the United State Postal Service for 39 years. He took administrative classes in Washington, D.C., and Indiana University. He worked in many administrative areas at the post office and retired as Richmond Postmaster in 1984. He was a former member of the Y’s Men Club and Elks Lodge, Cub Scout leader, RHS Hi-Y program, coach for basketball/football Gray-Y program, RHS class reunion committees, volunteer driver and board member of the Meals on Wheels program, American Legion Post 0710, and a Richmond Community Schools Study Buddy volunteer for 14 years. Don was a member of Central United Methodist Church, serving as an usher, and attended the Men’s Bible Study Fellowship. Don was committed to his family, church and his profession. He loved music, golf, cars, high school and I.U. sports, and especially being with his family. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth E. Conolly Hoover; two sons, Dr. Jack Lewis Hoover, Marion, Ind., and Gary Alan Hoover, San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Ann Hoover, also of San Diego; brother-in-law, Jack Conolly; niece, Carol Ray and husband Jim; cousins, Robert Hoover, Colorado, William and Georgia Hoover, California, and Jane Hoover, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Bernece Hoover; grandparents, Martin and Ella Hoover; and cousin, Richard Hoover. Services will be held at the Friends Fellowship Community Room, 2030 Chester Blvd. Friends may call Saturday, July 16, 2011, from noon to 1:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow. The Reverends Eldon Harzman and Maureen McCarthy will officiate. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Earlham Cemetery at the convenience of the family members.
