Dr. Arthur Braxton Millis

Dr. Arthur Braxton Millis, 89, died Monday, February 4, 2013, at Friends Fellowship Community Health Center. He resided in Richmond, Indiana, the majority of his life, where he led a full and distinguished career in the field of medicine. He was preceded in death in 2005 by Carolyn, his wife of 56 years . Born and raised in the small town of Campbellsburg, Indiana, the son of the late Frank Trueblood and Ruth Braxton Millis, he was the only person in his high school class to attend college. A young physician, Kermit Tower, who came to Campbellsburg during his junior year had a great influence on his desire to be a physician. However, his pre-med studies at Indiana University were interrupted by W.W. II. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Delhi, India, with the Signals Intelligence Service, where he was responsible for evaluating Japanese air codes using secret equipment known as SIGABA, the American counterpart to the Enigma machine. After the war, he returned to pre-med studies at Indiana University, where he also met his future wife, Carolyn Bliss, on a blind date at her sorority. They were married at Butler University’s Sweeney Chapel on June 25, 1949. He completed his medical degree at the top of his class and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honorary in 1951. Following a Residency in Internal Medicine at IU, Dr. and Mrs. Millis moved to Richmond in 1955, where he practiced medicine for 47 years and co-founded Internists, Inc. For a medical office of that time period, he was especially proud of the comprehensive services that Internists Inc. provided for his patients, including a lab and x-ray department. He served as Chief of Staff at Reid Hospital in 1962 and 1963. Among his many contributions to the community were volunteer service at the Earlham College Student Health Clinic and the Richmond High School athletic department, where he gave free physicals and served as team physician. Dr. Millis had many interests including collecting fine art and listening to jazz, and mastered many hobbies including photography and woodworking, but he especially enjoyed fishing at the Johnson farm. He was a long-time member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and is currently a member of First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by a sister, Mary Louise (Dr. George M., deceased) Johnson, Indianapolis, Indiana, and a brother, Jim (Sara) Millis, Columbus, Indiana; his children, Melanie (Bill) Wissel, Carmel, Indiana, Mark (Karin) Millis, Richmond, and Lisa (Rob) Perales, Richmond; 10 grandchildren, Emily (Brent) Chapman, Will Wissel, Dr. Andrew Arthur (Heather) Millis, Stephanie (Fred) Jones, Rob, John, Alex, and Audrey Perales, and Jacob and Renee Meloche, Bloomington, Indiana; nieces and nephews, Jane Johnson, Chuck (Laura) Johnson, Sarah (Larry) Copeland, Craig (Valerie) Johnson, and the late Dr. Greg (Barb) Millis. Dr. Millis was very devoted to the care of his patients and was known for his tremendous work ethic. A memorial visitation hosted by his children will be held from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. His remains will be interred at Earlham Cemetery at a later date.
