Dr. Olin Kenneth Wiland

RICHMOND, Ind. – Dr. Olin Kenneth Wiland, age 88, of Richmond, died Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Reid Hospital. Olin was born June 20, 1926 in Freeport, Pennsylvania, the only child of Olin McKinley Wiland and Olive Belle Nolf Wiland. He graduated from Swarthmore College, and in 1950 received an MD degree from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. Internship was at the U.S. Naval Hospital at St. Albans, New York. Olin was a member of the Navy Reserve for 11 years and served on active duty in World War II. In the Korean War he was the medical officer on the U.S.S. Libra AKA-12. Specialty training was at Indiana University Medical Center and he was a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology. In 1957 Olin came to Richmond and was a pathologist at Reid Hospital for 30 years, and was Director of Laboratory. He was Chief of Medical Staff for two terms, 1967-68 and 1979-80. For many years Olin was consultant pathologist at Fayette Memorial and Randolph County Hospitals. He was an author of five published medical articles. In 1987 Olin received the Rhoads Humanity in Medicine Award. After retirement he served on the Board of Directors of Reid Hospital for 9 years, 1988-96. Olin was a member of numerous professional societies and was a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists. He served in many volunteer groups and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Olin was a member of Forest Hills Country Club and served on the Board of Directors, 1971-73. His interests included sailing, golf, woodworking, photography, genealogy, lapidary, computers, and travel. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Ann” Barton Wiland, to whom he was married in 1956; three children, Linda L. Wiland and partner, Nan Arnold of Dallas, Texas, Olin M. Wiland and wife, Maria of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Dr. Bruce B. Wiland and wife, Susan of Carmel, Indiana; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Jeannette Sorn Wiland. Memorial visitation for Dr. Olin Kenneth Wiland will be from 12 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. The memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Kerry O’Brien officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
