Eleanor F. Smith

WINCHESTER, Ind. – Eleanor Lester Smith, age 78, formerly of Richmond, left her earthly home to go to her heavenly home on Friday, October 17, 2008, at Arbor Trace Exceptional Senior Living. Born March 17, 1930, in Randolph County, to Harold and Pauline Love Platt, Eleanor was a graduate of Lynn High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University and Masters Degree from Ball State University. She was a teacher for 26 years in the Richmond Community Schools. Eleanor was a member of The Church of Christ, Richmond Teachers Retirement Association, and Bible Study Fellowship. She was known by her friends as the “Chamber of Commerce Lady” and she was a member of the Red Hats. Eleanor was a sports fan, enjoyed cultural events, was an avid reader and world traveler. Survivors include her daughters, Janice Scheffler and her husband Hartmut of Centerville, Jill Lester of Indianapolis and Jenny Hoke and her husband Coleman of Lexington, Va.; son, Cameron Lester and his wife Caryl of Ft. Myers, Florida; step-son, Jerry Smith and his wife Susan of Winona, Minnesota; step-daughter, Janet Hargrave and her husband Lee of Yorktown; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; uncle, Hubert Love of New Castle; sister-in-law, Edith Platt of Lynn; friends; and many adopted daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; second husband, Paul Smith; first husband, Cyril Lester; and brother, Lewis Platt. The family would like to thank the staff of Arbor Trace and Aseracare Hospice for their care and compassion. Visitation for Eleanor F. Smith will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2008 at Doan & Mills. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery, Hagerstown.
