Jack B. Shank

RICHMOND, Ind. – Jack B. Shank, age 80, of Richmond, died Tuesday, October 18, 2016, surrounded by his family. Born January 24, 1936, in Richmond, Indiana, to Stephen Burris and Muriel Margaret Clutter Shank, Jack was a life-long resident of Richmond. He was a graduate of Richmond High School, where he won a state architecture drafting competition which cemented his interest in the field. Jack graduated from Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, with an engineering degree. He specialized in civil engineering, electrical engineering, architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC. Jack's career was steadfast in nearly five decades at the engineering and architecture firm, R.W. Clinton and Associates, which in 2002 became Lorenz Williams Clinton. Throughout his career, he served as President, Vice President, Executive Vice President, and Director of Engineering. His projects were middle schools, high schools, and retirement facilities from California to the East Coast. Jack also designed the Richmond City Building, the Annex Building, the Palladium-Item building, the Downtown Promenade, and some of the buildings at IU East and Ivy Tech. It meant a lot to him to accomplish projects that would serve the people well, and he looked forward to each new challenge. He always helped to develop his co-workers along the way and grasped the technology changes throughout the years. Jack was an artist and a classical pianist. He and his wife, Phyllis, were quite an item on the dance floor, drawing much attention. Jack was a border guide in the thick woods of Minnesota in the 1940’s. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Phyllis E. Judy Shank; children, Richard A. Shank of Richmond, Indiana, and Kimberly E. Shank-Burk of Richmond, Indiana; grandchildren, Alex (Emily Ann) Beattie, Nick Beattie, and Matt Beattie; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Grace Beattie; and many friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for Jack B. Shank will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Chaplain Rick Alvey officiating.
