Mary Kate Toppin Horn

RICHMOND, Ind. – Mary Kate Toppin Horn, age 85, of Richmond, died Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born October 9, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana, to John C. and Martha Lou Judkins Toppin, Kate lived in this community most of her life. She was a 1948 graduate of Lincoln High School, earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Ball State University, and pursued graduate work at the University of Colorado. Kate was a retired teacher with Richmond Community Schools where she taught her entire teaching career. She also was an art instructor at the Richmond Senior Center. Kate was a member of Alpha Chi, Retired Teachers Association, Richmond Art Museum Association, Tuesday Aftermath, United Methodist Women, Artisans, Richmond Art Club, and League of Women Voters. She was a very well known artist in Richmond. Kate attended a lot of Elder Hostels and travelled around the world. She enjoyed her family, ballroom dancing, sketching, painting, flower gardening, and playing bridge. Survivors include her daughter, Susan (Scott) McConnell of Williamsburg, Indiana; son, John M. Horn of Indianapolis, Indiana; three grandchildren, Mitchell R. McConnell of Richmond, Cory (Teresa) McConnell of Hartford City, Indiana, and Stacey (Brian) Romine of Lima, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Nolan, Ian, and Christian McConnell and Raegan and Jacob Romine; sisters, Sara Watters of Williamsburg, Virginia and Barbara Faith (Mick) Barnes of Angola, Indiana; niece, Ellen (Greg) Osborn of Fort Wayne, Indiana; nephews, Thomas (Jackie) Barnes of Graying, Michigan and Steven Watters and John Watters, both of Williamsburg, Virginia; great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousins, Jayne (Bob) Sample of Anderson, Indiana and Margaret Hormel of Cambridge City, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Horn; parents; and nephew, Benjamin Watters. Visitation for Mary Kate Horn will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, with Pastor Tom Ream officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Cambridge City, Indiana.
