Russell Howard Coulter

RICHMOND, Ind. – Russell Howard Coulter, age 94, of Richmond, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Reid Hospital. Born October 16, 1920, in Richmond, to Richard H. and Lula Frances Dunn Coulter, Russ was a life-long resident of Richmond. He was a 1940 graduate of Richmond High School. Russ entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army until 1945. He earned his B.S. in social studies and education administration in 1952 from Ball State University. In 1960, he started the Wayne Teachers Federal Credit Union. Russ earned his master’s degree in social studies and education administration in 1966. He worked with the Richmond Community Schools for many years as a teacher at Riley Junior High School and Pleasant View Junior High School; principal at Boston Junior High School, Pleasant View Junior High School, and Dennis Junior High School; and director of Richmond’s adult education program. Russ was a member of Wayne County Retired Teachers Association and attended West Richmond Friends Meeting. He loved continuous education and was a life-long learner. Russ cared about physical fitness and learning about people and their families. Survivors include his children, Gregory (Rita) Coulter of Indianapolis, Indiana, Teresa (Daryl) Lane of Cambridge City, Indiana, and Eric (Sara) Coulter of Richmond; step-sons, Fred (Sharon) Williamson of Florida and Tim (David) Williamson of California; grandchildren, Clay (Jenny) Coulter of Carmel, Indiana, Tanner (Erin) Coulter of Texas, Erica Coulter of Richmond, and Spencer Coulter of Richmond; great-grandchildren, Evan, Alex, and Cooper; nieces; nephews; and many friends, former students, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doyne’ French Coulter who died May 10, 2014; first wife, Sara Myers Coulter; parents; brother, Ralph Harold Coulter; two sisters, Bernice Beckman and Velma Lucille MacRorie; and niece, Pam Beckman. Visitation for Russell Howard Coulter will be from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Joshua Brown officiating, and one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
