Bettie Jane Cook Martin

RICHMOND, Ind. – Bettie Jane Cook Martin died on November 26, 2011, at her residence at Christian Care Manor, Mesa, Ariz. She was born on April 12, 1922, in Patriot, Ind., the daughter of Walter Cook and Bernice Detmer Cook. She spent her early childhood in Richmond but spent much of her youth in Hamilton, Mont. Upon returning to Indiana, she attended Greens Fork High School, graduating in 1940. Following her graduation, she attended Richmond Business School and was subsequently employed by Perfect Circle in Hagerstown, Ind. On May 3, 1946, she married Walter C. Martin. They resided in Centerville for many years. Bettie was an exceptional seamstress and made most of her own and her daughters’ wardrobes (much to their chagrin when they were too young to appreciate)! She was also a talented musician and was the church organist at the Centerville Friends Church for many years, and subsequently at the Faith United Lutheran Church of Richmond and then the Presbyterian Church in Liberty, Ind. Walter and Bettie had two daughters, Nancy Sue Martin Tom of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Greta Jo Martin Federico of Hagerstown, Ind. Bettie had resided n Arizona for 11 ½ years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1972. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Max D. Cook of Spokane, Wash. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Tom (David), Greta Federico (Richard); grandchildren, Timothy J. Ladakos (Cherri) of Jacksonville, N.C., Elizabeth A. Tom (Brian Ward) of Tempe, Ariz., Andrea R. Tom (Mark Brush) of Ann Arbor, Mich., Robert C. Tom (Shelley) of Ashville, N.C., Jessica Lynn Stout Bell (Kory) of Beech Grove, Ind., William Justin Stout of San Francisco, Calif., Jenny Rebecca Stout Hoyer (Reed) of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; step-grandsons, Albert A.N. Federico of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Richard E.N. Federico of Washington, D.C.; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation for Bettie Jane Cook Martin will be from 2 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond, Ind.
