Betty June Kelley

RICHMOND, Ind. – Betty June Kelley, age 93, of Richmond, passed into peace Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born May 15, 1923, in Richmond, Indiana, Betty lived in this community for all of her life. She was a graduate of Richmond High School and Earlham College. Betty left Richmond for a brief time to work at Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, but returned to be married for sixty-one and a half years to Wendell Kelley, who she met while attending Earlham. At Earlham, she filled in as Assistant Registrar. Betty worked as a secretary and Education Director at Central United Methodist Church. A forever member of Central, she was also an active part of the District, Conference, and local Church Circle, and contributed her artistic talents to years of Christmas Bazaars. Betty was a self-avowed ‘professional volunteer’. She volunteered for Family Service Board, and was president of Richmond Symphony Women, Richmond Women’s Club, and Delta Theta Tau. Betty volunteered with Wendell at Morrisson-Reeves Library, Wayne County Historical Museum, Whitewater Opera Company, and many others. She tutored at Test Middle School and Starr School. Betty and Wendell especially enjoyed helping with the birthday parties for Starr students. One of her favorite roles as a volunteer was with the USO during World War II, taking her place in the booth at the Pennsylvania Station to help guide troops as they traveled through Richmond. Betty and Wendell made travel their hobby, visiting all fifty states and many other countries. She was also a prolific artist, and was happy to talk with visitors about her extensive collection of paintings. Survivors include her son, Craig Kelley of Cincinnati; daughter, Patty (Mike Dickerson) Kelley of Richmond; and the families of her sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell, and her three sisters, Bee Brown, Phyllis Jean Heinbaugh, and Joan Wessel. Betty’s family would like to thank all the staff and residents at Friends Fellowship Community, the Central family, and AseraCare Hospice for their patience and care. Visitation for Betty June Kelley will be from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 East Main Street, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Central United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
