Buford V. Fowler

RICHMOND, Ind. – Buford V. Fowler, age 92, of Richmond, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Reid Hospital. Born July 25, 1916, in Rush County, Indiana, to Claude and Lena Whitaker Fowler, he was a 1935 graduate of Raleigh High School of Rush County. Buford was a resident of Richmond since 1950. He retired in 1978 after 30 years of service from the Kroger Company where he worked as a meat cutter. After retirement, Buford continued security work for the Kroger Company until 1991. Buford was a firm believer in community service. He was one of the first people to serve on the Wayne County Civil Defense Unit, which later became the Wayne County Sheriffs’ Reserve Unit. He dedicated an untold number of hours to community service over many years through his association with the Wayne County Sheriffs’ Office. He was given an award by the Eastside Optimist Club in 1978 during “Respect for Law Week.” He was commended for his nearly 19 years of service as a turnkey responsible for transporting prisoners at the Wayne County Safety Building. He donated all of those years of service for the betterment of the community in which he lived. He later was hired as a paid employee and worked many more years for the Wayne County Sheriffs’ Office. Buford enjoyed traveling, fishing in Michigan, and hunting. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Esther Setser Richardson Fowler; daughter, Gale Alexander and her husband Paul of Connersville; two grandsons, Anthony Alexander and his wife Vicky of Connersville and Shawn Alexander and his wife Lucinda of Hagerstown; great-grandson, Logan Paul Alexander of Hagerstown; three step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Victoria, and Maggie, all of Connersville; sister, Norma Nichols of Connersville; several cousins; nieces; nephews; and many friends. A special thanks to Theodore and Lynn Marinakes for their many years of friendship. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for Buford V. Fowler will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009 at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Max Knight officiating. Burial will be in College Corner Cemetery, West College Corner, Indiana.
