Carol W. Beals

RICHMOND, Ind. – Carol W. Beals, age 87, of Richmond, died Thursday, July 16, 2015. Born December 3, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to H. Willard and Florence Henrietta Guedel Walter, Carol lived much of her life in Richmond. She was a graduate of Earlham College. As an active member of First Friends Meeting, Richmond, Indiana, in her earlier years, she was clerk of three commissions; Ministry and Oversight, Social Concerns; Stewardship; and Finance. Carol was a Stephen Minister. For 24 years she was associated with Friends United Meeting, working with Quaker Life Magazine where she retired as managing editor in 1994. The following year Carol was co-recipient of the Patrick Henry Christian Writing Scholarship, presented by the Earlham School of Religion. She then published a book on stewardship entitled Cheerful Giving & Kingdom Living. Carol had a special concern for Jamaican Yearly Meeting and made a number of trips to the Island for workshops and conferences. She will be remembered for her hospitality, intercessory prayer, and note writing. Carol’s interests included family camping, needlework, and writing. Survivors include her daughters, Leslie (Arlo) Hall and Lynn Beals, both of Fountain City, Indiana, and Laura (Gary) Beeler of Peru, Iowa; grandchildren, Hallie (Blake) Havard of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Madison and Forrest Beeler of Peru, Iowa; dear nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Ellen Burns of Crawfordsville, Indiana and Olive (George) Ranck of Williamsburg, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John E. Beals, who died on May 7, 2008 and son, Robert E. Beals, who died in 1991. A memorial service for Carol W. Beals will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2015, in the Community Room of Friends Fellowship Community, 2030 Chester Blvd., Richmond with Derek Parker officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
