Carrie Johnson Goldberg

RICHMOND, Ind. – Carrie Johnson Goldberg, age 101, of Richmond, died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born January 11, 1913, in Gadbury, Kentucky, to Rollin and Nettie Denney Johnson, Carrie graduated from high school in 1929 at the age of 16 and was the valedictorian of her class. Afterwards, she attended Earlham College for 2 years. She lived in Spiceland, Indiana, and later moved to Evansville, Indiana, where she earned a bachelor's degree from Evansville College. Carrie lived in Richmond, and then Arizona, before retiring in Richmond. She was a CPA, having worked at Ernst and Ernst and retired as the CPA for Friends Fellowship Community in 1976. Carrie was a former member of AAUW and was the oldest member of the Spiceland Alumni Association, having attended the May 2014 meeting where she was honored for graduating 85 years ago. She was a member of First Friends Meeting in Richmond. Carrie loved to read and enjoyed Book Club and playing bridge. She was a deep thinker, broadminded, very sharp, and a remarkable woman. Carrie enjoyed following stock markets and politics. Survivors include her grandchildren, Terri Ratcliff (John) Spafford of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Robert (Robin) Ratcliff of Evansville, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Amanda Spafford, Christopher Spafford, Robert Ratcliff, and James Ratcliff; sister, Martha Solomon of Lapel, Indiana; brother, Rollin Johnson Jr. of Cleveland, Tennessee; cousins; nieces; nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 35 years, Charles Ratcliff, who died in 1971; son, John Ratcliff who died in 2010; second husband of 21 years, Isadore Goldberg, who died in 1997; parents; sister, Mary Templeton; and four brothers, Lisle, Joe, Gordon, and Johnny Johnson. Visitation for Carrie Johnson Goldberg will be from 11 to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at the United Methodist Church, 123 North 2nd Street, Spiceland, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Spiceland, Indiana, with Derek Parker and Pastor Carol Wiley officiating. Burial will be in Circle Grove Cemetery, Spiceland, Indiana. A Memorial Service will be held at Friends Fellowship Community at a later date.
