Catherine Louise Lewis Cornell

CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Catherine Louise Lewis Cornell, age 96, of Centerville, died Saturday, May 21, 2016, at her home. She was born on October 24, 1919, in Rossville, Illinois, to Wilber and Marie McClusky Lewis. Catherine was a 1938 graduate of Rossville High School and went on to graduate from Danville Beauty School in December 1938. She married Harley W. Cornell on April 8, 1939, in the Rossville Methodist parsonage. Catherine enjoyed raising her three girls and being a farmer’s wife. They moved to Centerville, Indiana, in 1954, to a small farm where she grew a large garden and did lots of canning. Catherine belonged to a homemakers club where she met some of her closest friends. She was a member of the Centerville Christian Church for many years and later became a member of Living Faith Church of God. Catherine loved her family and enjoyed nothing more than to spend time with them. She and Harley would make frequent trips back to Illinois to visit with their daughter and family. Catherine enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports and watching them show their animals at the fair, even when she was not able to attend she was the first to call to see how you did. Until recently, she could still be seen on the sidelines watching her great-grandkids. Survivors include her children, Joan Poindexter of Centerville, Indiana, Ralph (Jane McFarland) Poindexter of Connersville, Indiana, Jean (Tony) Terhaar of Williamsburg, Indiana, and Kay (John) Carlson of Milford, Illinois; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Harley; parents; two sisters; two brothers, one of whom was killed in the Korean War; and son-in-law, John Ingram. Visitation for Catherine Louise Lewis Cornell will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2016, at Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, Centerville. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
