Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Wilson

RICHMOND, Ind. - Cynthia Ann Wilson, age 65, of Richmond, died on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at Golden Living Center - Golden Rule. She was known as 'Cindy' to her friends and family, and for most of her life had a ready smile and a good nature. She was born on May 16, 1951, in Richmond, Indiana, to Carlton 'Tony' and Mary Elizabeth 'Bette' Wilson. Cindy suffered 'Birth Asphyxia' which left her with lifelong disabilities, but her spirit was strong and friendly, and 'I like you!' was one of her favorite phrases. Cindy was an inspiration. Tony and Bette Wilson became very active in the mental health community in Richmond. They worked with other parents and children suffering from similar disabilities to create new programs and eventually a school called 'Green Acres'. Housing was later added and Cindy spent more than 40 years there as one of its original residents as it transitioned to Achieva, AWS, and finally Benchmark. Cindy was a former member of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years where she loved to sing hymns, especially on Christmas Eve. She was also a big fan of the Beatles and still knew the lyrics of many songs. 'Lady Madonna' and 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' were two of her favorites. She was a long-time Girl Scout and participated in the Special Olympics. Cindy wasn’t quite like you and me. She was something special and she will very much be missed. She is survived by her brothers, Christopher Wilson (wife Sue) of West Worthington, Ohio, and Mark Wilson (wife Holly) of Hull, Massachusetts. She has many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents. Visitation for Cindy will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Doan and Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor David A. Layman officiating. Private burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
