Daphne Ripperger

RICHMOND, Ind. – Daphne Ripperger, a beacon of strength and inspiration, passed away on Thursday, April 18th, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born in London, England, on March 26, 1934, she touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Carroll Ripperger; parents Anne and Fred Tunney; sisters, Phyllis Martin (Roy) and Doreen Dunmore (Pete); brothers- in-law, Harold Ripperger, Bill Ripperger, and Lou Ripperger; and sisters-in-law, Helen Lawler and Mary O’Donnell. Daphne lovingly remembered, leaves behind four children; Steve Ripperger (Linda), Jim Ripperger (fiancé Karen), Mike Ripperger (Natalie), and her only daughter Teresa Radtke (Tim); 11 Grandchildren- Jessica Ripperger-Beauter,(Matt), Kirsten Ripperger-Kilpatrick (John), Kyle Ripperger (Kellie), Jenna Ripperger-Wetherelle, (Brandon), Katelyn Ripperger, Jake Radtke (Stephanie), Kelsey Ripperger, Tyler Ripperger, Amanda Ripperger, Luke Radtke, and Geneva Sumner; 14 great-grandchildren; Darwyn, Miles, Meredith, Emma, Ellie, Max, Eli, Sam, Gabriella, Grant, Lilly, John, Jack, and Wyatt. Daphne is also survived by brother Fred Tunney (residing in England), brother Brian Tunney (Judy), Brothers-in-laws Ed Ripperger (Rosanne), and Bob Ripperger (Kathy), and many nieces and nephews from the Ripperger and Tunney families. Daphne's life was a testament to resilience and courage. Growing up during World War II in London, she experienced the hardships of war firsthand. Despite the chaos, she found solace in her mother's calm reassurance during bombings and air raids, guiding her children to safety in the underground tunnels. Tragically, Daphne lost her mother at the tender age of 14, thrusting her into a role of responsibility beyond her years. She dropped out of school to support her family, working tirelessly to provide for her younger brothers. It was during the Korean War that Daphne met the love of her life, Carroll Ripperger, stationed at Chelveston Airforce Base in England. Their love blossomed amidst the challenges of wartime, and they were united in marriage on September 6, 1956. She embarked on a new chapter of her life in the United States, embracing change with grace and a deep appreciation for the Ripperger/Wissel family in Richmond Indiana. Daphne was baptized at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in 1957 and lived a life of strong faith. While Carroll worked at the Wayne Dairy, Daphne took on the responsibility of running the concession stand at Glen Miller Park. She also pursued her passion for hairstyling, obtaining her beautician license and opening her own hair salon, where she formed lasting friendships within the community. Daphne successfully managed the Elks Country Club pool from 1976 to 1984 where she created an amazing environment for many generations to enjoy. Daphne and Carroll were co -owners of the family business, The Bottle Shop and The Crosstown Carryout in Richmond. She was an avid golfer, bowler, card player, artist, seamstress and she cherished moments spent socializing with friends and family. Despite her busy schedule, Daphne always prioritized her children, displaying and instilling in them integrity, a strong work ethic, compassion, and the importance of enjoying life. Her impact extended beyond her own children and grandchildren, deeply touching the lives of their friends as well. The memorial service to celebrate Daphne's life will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond, IN. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leland Legacy Holiday fund.
