Dorothy M. Snyder

CENTERVILLE, Ind. - Dorothy M. Snyder, 88, of Centerville, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Ambassador Healthcare in Centerville. Born on July 11, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was the daughter of Anton and Helen Jersild Kirkegaard. She was the beloved wife of the late Linn Snyder. The second child in a large Danish family, Dorothy grew up surrounded by siblings and cousins near Denver and was known for her love of children and her infectious merry giggle. She was a first-rate catcher for her dad’s pitching on the family baseball team. Dorothy graduated from high school in Aurora, Colorado, and entered into the Cadet Nurse Corps program at Denver General Hospital during World War II, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1946.The war led her to cross paths with her future husband. She married Linn Snyder at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Richmond, Indiana, in 1947. They raised a family on a farm south of Centerville and lived there for 59 years. Dorothy appreciated the rich soil and plentiful rains of Indiana; she loved to grow and share gardens of vegetables and flowers. After her children started school, Dorothy worked as a Registered Nurse at Reid Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the Centerville Methodist Church. Dorothy was the beloved mother of 6 children who survive her: Larry Snyder (Kathy) of Centerville, Walter Snyder (Meredith) of Indianapolis, Bob Snyder (Yvonne) of Richmond, Ed Snyder of Madison, Wis., Ruth Snyder, of Frederick, Md., and Phil Snyder (Regina) of Ijamsville, Md.; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters and 1 brother. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Family and friends will be warmed for years by her quilts and afghans, and by memories of her love. A short memorial service will be held immediately following the calling on Saturday, February 18, 2012, for Dorothy Snyder at 4:00 p.m., at the Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, Centerville, Indiana.
