Dorothy M. Thorman

RICHMOND, Ind. – Dorothy M. Thorman, age 98, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born August 16, 1919, in Dayton, Ohio, to John G. and Corinne McLear Graf, Dorothy had lived in Richmond most of her life. She graduated from Morton High School in Richmond and attended both Earlham College and Indiana University. While at IU, Dorothy enjoyed campus life and the sisterhood of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She was always an avid sports fan and IU booster. Dorothy worked at IRC&D Motor Freight for almost 30 years, holding various positions and eventually becoming President of the company. After retirement, she began spending winters in Hawaii and summers at her beloved lakeside cabin in Wisconsin. Although Dorothy loved to travel, she was always happy to return to her family and friends in Richmond. Dorothy loved music and shared her musical talent generously. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and sang in the choir for most of her life. Dorothy was a member of the Altrusa Club and the Ladies Shrine Guild. She enjoyed art, writing skits, playing piano, cooking, and decorating for church and club events. Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Michael) Chock of Kailua, Hawaii; son, Harry (Kathy) Thorman of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Trent Thorman, Kyle (Trang) Chock, and Allison Chock; great-grandson, Michael Chock; daughter-in-law, Connie Thorman of Palm Bay, Florida; sister, Ruth Dunlap of Richmond; sister-in-law, Betty Thorman of Richmond; nieces; nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Thorman; son, John H. Thorman; grandson, Ty N. Thorman; and parents. The family would like to thank Sharon Jordan, Flora Shepard, and the caregivers at Friends Fellowship Community for their devotion, love, and kindness. Visitation for Dorothy M. Thorman will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 1, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 1, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Meckley officiating. Burial will be in Lutherania Cemetery.
