Evelyn M. Smuck

RICHMOND, Ind. - Evelyn M. Smuck, age 85, of Richmond, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Friends Fellowship Community. She was born May 4, 1922, in Minerva, Ohio, to Harry E. and Ruth M. Phillips Sutton. Evelyn attended Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan) and received her registered nurse training at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a member of West Richmond Friends. Evelyn was a missionary at the Friends School in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a nurse at the Friends Boys School in Ramallah, Palestine, and at the Kaimosi Friends Hospital in Kenya, East Africa. Finally, she worked as a nurse at Reid Hospital beginning in 1966 until her retirement in the 1980’s. Evelyn was active in the United Society of Friends Women International on the local, state, national and international levels. She was also involved with the Associated Committee on Indian Affairs and with the Friends World Committee for Consultation. She was a Sunday school teacher and the receiving treasurer for West Richmond Friends. Evelyn had been a resident at Friends Fellowship for almost 10 years and remained very interested in missionary activities. Survivors include one daughter, Amy England and her husband Garry of Greens Fork; two sons, Norman J. Smuck and his wife Maxine of Paoli, Ind., and Vernon L. Smuck; three grandchildren, Melissa Stout and her husband Joe of Franklin, Ind., Christopher Smuck of Paoli, Ind., and Whitney England of Greens Fork; one great-grandson, Owen Stout; and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold V. Smuck, to whom she was married Aug. 27, 1944, together for 50 years. A memorial service for Evelyn M. Smuck will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at West Richmond Friends Meeting, 609 West Main St., Richmond, with Joshua Brown officiating. Private entombment will be in the Earlham Memorial Mausoleum. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road W., Richmond.
