Faye S. Jose

RICHMOND, Ind.-Faye Stewart Jose died peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, Indiana. Faye was born on May 26, 1923, in Pitsanuloke, Siam (now Thailand), the youngest of four children of Herbert Walker Stewart and Margaret Pearce Stewart. She grew up in Thailand, where her parents served as missionaries. Her life was a reflection of a devotion to serving others that she gained from her family and her warm affection for the Thai people and their culture. Faye came to the United States for high school at Northfield Academy in western Massachusetts. This was followed by Swarthmore College outside Philadelphia, where she majored in zoology, hoping to become a physician. She met Victor Jose in 1940 during their freshman year at Swarthmore, and both graduated early because of the demands of World War II. Following graduation, Faye taught at the University of Pennsylvania nursing school while Vic served in the Navy. They were married on June 3, 1944, in Miami, Florida, when Vic had a week-long leave. After the War, Vic and Faye moved to Evanston, Illinois, where Vic was in graduate school and Faye worked. Their first child was born in Evanston, as Vic began his lifelong career in journalism and Faye took on responsibilities for the growing family. In 1947 they moved to Logansport, Indiana, where their second and third children were born. In 1951 the growing family moved to Richmond, where their fourth child was born. They made one final move in 1957 (four houses down the street), where they lived for the next fifty-two years before moving to Friends Fellowship Community in 2009. In 1953 Vic started the West Side Enterprise weekly newspaper, which grew to become The Graphic. Faye handled a lot of bookkeeping and administrative duties for the newspaper while juggling the demands of the family. She also wrote a weekly column called “Dear Gals”, which shined a light on the busy and important lives of women and mothers in the Richmond community. After her children were out of elementary school, Faye returned to her medical and science background and worked for many years as a bacteriologist and clinical lab director at Reid Hospital and the Pediatric Center. Faye was active in many community, cultural, school, and church organizations, including Tuesday Aftermath, Tourists Club, SPUR, and Strings Unlimited. As her children began to leave home, she found time to actively serve as a tutor and mentor through Girls Club, her church, and other organizations. She was active in many local and regional roles for First Presbyterian Church, and was one of the first women ordained as an Elder. Her desire to serve children and others in the community is reflected by her serving as a referee for the new youth soccer league when it was initiated in Richmond at a time many years ago when there were few people in Richmond familiar with the game. Faye is survived by her four children, Cindy (husband Hank Magnuski, children Nick/Kristie and Sarah, and grandchildren Everett and August), Sandy (wife Connie, children Derek/Rachel, Becca and Alida, and grandchildren Lorelei and Reina), Jim (wife Ann Rollins and children Daniel and Alex), and David (wife Mimi, children Matthew and Evan, and grandchild Ian). She was preceded in death by her husband Vic, who died on December 5, 2014; parents; and siblings, Herbert, Ruth and Lois. The memorial service for Faye Stewart Jose will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, in the Community Room of Friends Fellowship Community, 2030 Chester Boulevard, Richmond with Pastor David A.
