George Grubb Jr.

RICHMOND, Ind. – George Grubb Jr., age 86, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Reid Health. George was born May 23, 1929, in Laurel County, Kentucky, to George Washington and Maggie Miller Grubb. He attended school in East Bernstadt, Kentucky. In 1951, George was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed stateside in Fort Hood, Texas, during the Korean War. He played on the softball team while he was enlisted. George also witnessed atomic bomb testing in Desert Rock, Nevada. He left the Army in 1953 at the rank of Corporal. George met his wife, Emily Inez Gill Grubb, in the summer of 1954. George and Inez were married in June of 1955. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary this year with family and friends. Those closest to George will always remember his love of pool and horseshoes. George began playing pool at the age of twelve and continued until his hospitalization in mid-October. George was also well-known at the local horseshoe courts. He was the Rose City Wayne County Horseshoe Champion for fourteen years. He was also ranked eleventh in the nation out of fifteen-thousand horseshoe players in 1976. George was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky basketball program. George was employed by the Gear Works in Richmond from 1955 to 1986, retiring after 31 years of service. He played on horseshoe, bowling, and softball teams for the Gear Works. George was a member of the Southside Baptist Church, formerly located on the south side of Richmond. Survivors include his wife, Inez Gill Grubb; children, Rhonda (William) Grimes of Richmond, Gary (Lisa) Grubb of Valparaiso, Indiana, Karen (Robert) Schroeder of Richmond, Larry (Nancy) Grubb of Richmond, and Diana (Jim) Hoskins of Williamsburg, Indiana; grandchildren, Shelly (Adam) Pfenninger, Rhett (Bailey) Schroeder, Hannah (Dyson) Wake, Tyler Schroeder, Kyle Grubb, Korrin Johnson (Korak Ladd), Lindsey Schroeder, Kayla Grimes, Kraimer Johnson (Murphy Jones), Brandon Grubb, Casey Grubb, and Kohl Hoskins; great-grandchildren, Kendall Ladd, Meadow Ladd, and two additional great-grandchildren expected in January and April; and siblings, Dortha Hurley of Richmond, Pauline Coldiron of Connersville, Indiana, Aletta (Carl) Collier of Texas, and Rose Robinson of Richmond. George cherished spending time with his family and will be missed very much. George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Leola Garrett, Gertrude Lee, Geneva Patton, Everett Grubb, Lois Grubb, and Boyd Grubb. Visitation for George Grubb Jr. will be from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2015, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Fountain City Wesleyan Church, 5600 N. US 27, Richmond with Pastor Keith Vincent officiating.
