Harlow Haas

RICHMOND, Ind. - Franklin Harlow Haas, age 87, of Richmond, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at Arbor Trace Exceptional Senior Living. Born February 6, 1922, in Richmond to Harlow Edgar and Lucile Haner Haas, Harlow spent his early childhood in the interior of what was then called British Guiana, where his father was a pioneering missionary. The family returned to the United States in 1930. A 1940 graduate of Richmond High School, Harlow attended Earlham College prior to his enlistment in the United States Marines in August 1941. He was a decorated Marine Guerilla Raider, serving in several battle theatres across the Pacific. Upon leaving the Marines in late 1945, he relocated to Chicago where he graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. Harlow was a professional illustrator and a creative cartoonist for the television industry. Returning to Richmond in the 1950's, Harlow served as the Advertising Director for Knollenberg's Department Store and was a noted commercial and graphic artist. A number of his works are on permanent display in museums and corporate offices around the Midwest. His works have been published both nationally and internationally. He took special joy from his creations for the circus industry of America, which used his work in multiple publications and yearbooks. Harlow was a founding charter member of the Whitewater Valley Detachment of the United States Marine Corps League, served as a Combat Artist for the United States Marines and was honored as the Marine of the Year. Harlow was a member of many groups and organizations including the Richmond Art Association. Harlow is survived by his bride of 65 years, Margaret Haas of Richmond; his daughter, Susan (Robert) Waters of Richmond; his son, Stephen (Eileen) Haas of Boca Raton, Florida; four grandchildren, Phillip Waters of Indianapolis, Lance Waters of Richmond, Nicole (Donald) Bostic of Jacksonville, Florida, and Audrey Haas of Ocean, New Jersey. He also leaves behind one special cousin, Virginia Sutton; numerous nieces and nephews and several close friends. Visitation for Franklin Harlow Haas will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2009, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 21 at Doan & Mills Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Richmond with military honors by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
