Harry Wesley Chenoweth

RICHMOND, Ind. – Harry Wesley Chenoweth, age 94, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 21, 2013, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born October 20, 1918, in Richmond, to Harry Wesley Sr. and Mary Smith Chenoweth, Harry was a life-long resident of Richmond. A graduate of Morton High School and Indiana University, Harry served his county during World War II as an officer in the Navy onboard the destroyer USS Aulick. Upon his discharge, he joined his father and brother in the family business, Chenoweth Cadillac. He later became President of the dealership, finally selling the business and retiring in 1973. Harry was elected to the Board of Directors of First National Bank in 1963. He was a dedicated member of the Board, serving as Board Chairman from 1971 until the bank was sold in 1980. Harry was one of 17 founding members of Reid Foundation and became Chairman of the Foundation in 1975. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Forest Hills Country Club, and Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at IU. Harry loved nature and could identify every bird and tree in the area. He was an enthusiastic golfer, enjoying the sport well into his eighties. Most of all, Harry appreciated his countless friends, so many of whom grew up with him in Richmond and Wayne County. Harry was a wonderful father and will be deeply missed by his children, Harry “Duke” (Kathleen) Chenoweth III of Manhattan Beach, California, Michael (Sandra) Chenoweth of Indianapolis, Anne Fisher of Santa Barbara, California, and Sara (Len) Shook of Avon; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and very special friend, Carol Lou Woodward. Harry was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Olive “Sis” Chenoweth who died in 2004; brother, William Chenoweth; and sisters, Harriet Chenoweth and Barbara Mariani. A memorial service for Harry W. Chenoweth will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Friends Fellowship Community Room, 2030 Chester Blvd., Richmond, with Chaplain Maureen McCarthy-Magill officiating.
