Jack T. Charles

CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Jack T. Charles, age 83, of Centerville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, March 24, 2017. Born October 25, 1933, in New Madison, Ohio, Jack graduated from Richmond High School in 1952 and then entered the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge from the Army he attended Purdue University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jack spent most of his career (31 years) working for Belden Corporation in Richmond, Indiana. He was the third of four boys born to Roy and Treva Charles. The Charles boys’ troublemaking exploits were legendary. Jack married the love of his life, Shirley Prather. They have been married for 61 years. In addition to Shirley he is survived by his three children, David Charles (Kerri), Kim Lee (Bill), and John Charles (Gina); 11grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Matt Charles (Megan), Daniel Charles (Meredith), Ali Charles, Gabbi Charles, Sam Lee, Kate Lee, William Charles, Jack Charles, Adam Lee, Madison Lewis, and Hannah Lewis; and great-grandchildren, Brayden “Big Cat” Charles, Claire Charles, and James Charles. In addition Jack is survived by his oldest brother Billie Charles. He was preceded by his parents and brothers, Richard and Bobby Charles. Jack was a member of Centerville Christian Church. He enjoyed golf and once had a hole-in-one. Jack joked that the golf ball never got off the ground. He loved working on old cars, particularly 1965 and 1966 Ford Mustangs and 1956 and 1957 Ford Thunderbirds. Jack was a proud Boilermaker. His main passion was his family and wife. Jack loved spending time with his family, brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. All who knew him have fond memories of spending time with Jack, Uncle Jack or Grandpa. He was the rock of his family. Charles will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Cochran officiating.
