James Jefferson Sipe

RICHMOND, Ind. - James Jefferson Sipe, 80, of Richmond, died peacefully at home Monday, afternoon, October 18, 2010. He was comforted by daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Larry Johnson. He was born in Saratoga, Ind., at his Grandmother Delauter's home on February 19, 1930. James was the only child of Forrest and Marguerite (Delauter) Sipe and lived all of his life in Richmond. He was the grandson of Elliott and Hester Elizabeth (Shireling) Sipe and Charles and Martha (Key) Delauter. James served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a proud member of the American Legion. He was a machinist by trade and worked for AVCO and Bucyrus-Erie. James was the owner/operator of the Sipe Coin Laundry (aka: U-Washee Coin Laundry) for nearly 50 years. He appreciated his loyal employees and customers and always believed that customer service was the best business practice. He always enjoyed his Wednesday morning breakfast at Carver's Restaurant with his treasured Richmond High School classmates of 1946-1948. Many world problems were solved during their spirited discussions. Survivors include his daughters, Jill (Alan) Wells of Round Lake, Ill., Jennifer (Larry) Johnson of Richmond; and son, Jeff (Susan) Sipe of Macon, Ga. He will be missed by his beloved grandchildren, Kayleigh and Lydia Wells, Robin (Paul) Mann, James (Kelley) Sipe, and Elizabeth (Keith) Hodge; his darling great-granddaughters, Lila Reece, Ashley Marie Elizabeth Cordell, Samantha Sipe and Madison Hodge; cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Joanne Isley Sipe; his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Sipe; and his son, Roger Whitehead. Visitation for James Jefferson Sipe will be from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2010, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Chaplain David Garman officiating. Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery.
