Joanna Myrline Hamilton

RICHMOND, Ind. – Joanna Myrline Hamilton, age 94, of Richmond and formerly of Centerville, died Sunday, December 8, 2013, at her home. Born May 5, 1919, on a family farm near New Madison, Ohio, to Claude Vernon and Mildred Lowdenslager Thomas, she graduated from New Madison High School in 1937. Joanna worked as a secretary at Earlham College. She retired as Vault Clerk at First National Bank, now Chase Bank. Joanna also worked at the election polls. Joanna was a member of Central United Methodist Church and past member of the church choir, women’s group, and Primetimers. She was a former board member of Woman’s Club of Richmond. Joanna served as Memorial Chairman of the Wayne County Heart Association for many years. She was a past member of Amicacia Club and a charter member of the Richmond Rose Garden, having traveled twice to Germany with the group to study rose gardens. Joanna was a former member of the Petal and Stem Garden Club. She served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. Joanna truly loved being with her family, enjoyed working with her flowers and plants, and loved her pets. Survivors include her son, Philip L. (Jeanene) Hamilton of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren, Tony (Carolyn) Hamilton of Plainfield, Illinois, Michael (Amy) Moore of Pelham, Alabama, Jason Moore of Huntsville, Alabama, Melanie (Chris) Lehman of Nashville, Tennessee, and Angie (Daniel) Hamilton-Lowe of Culver City, California; six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Matthew, Jonah, Hadley, Maggie, and Maya; sister, Madonna Miller of Titusville, Florida; nieces; and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick G. Hamilton, who died June 2, 1984; daughter, Mary Ellen Moore; and sister, Betty Jean Thomas. Visitation for Joanna Myrline Hamilton will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Banker officiating. Entombment will be in the Earlham Memorial Mausoleum.
