John R. "Jack" Farmer

CENTERVILLE, Ind. - John R. “Jack” Farmer, age 69, of Centerville, Indiana, died unexpectedly Friday, July 7, 2017, at his home. Born September 23, 1947, in Richmond, Indiana, to Max E. and Ethel A. Thorman Farmer, Jack was a life-long resident of this community. He graduated from Whitewater High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from IU East. Jack proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Richmond Police Department in 2000, after serving for nearly 30 years as a Major, Captain, Lieutenant, and Patrol Officer. Jack later retired from Cincinnati Insurance, after serving as a claims adjuster for 14 years. He was a 15 year member of the Centerville Lions Club, local VFW, and was passionately involved in Wayne County 4-H, as a participant and supporter, throughout his lifetime. Jack was a true family man. He was a great son, husband, father, and grandfather. Jack loved his family more than anything in the world. He had a great sense of humor and was extremely proud of his Wayne County and agricultural roots. Jack was a “Farmer” in name and spirit. He was one of the “good ones”. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Joyce Bach Farmer of Centerville; children, Ty (Teresa) Farmer of Centerville, Justin Farmer of Fountain City, Indiana, Sarah (Jason) Sparks of Fountain City, and Pam (Luke) Tidrow of Centerville; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jacob, Max, Casey, Sophia, Mason, and Deacon John; aunts; cousins, including Marc Helms and Terry Thorman; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for John R. “Jack” Farmer will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery at a later date. For those of you who knew Jack well, he was more of a “four legs and fur kind of guy”.
