John Montgomery Andrews

RICHMOND, Ind. - John Montgomery Andrews, age 100, of Richmond, formerly of the Fountain City area, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community. He has been a resident at Friends Fellowship Community since November 2013, and the family would like to thank Friends Fellowship Community and Reid Health Hospice Services for his care. He was born on March 20, 1916, in Indianapolis to Rev. Novvel V. and Winifred Hutchins Andrews. As John was growing up, he and his siblings sang on a radio program in Evansville, Indiana. John graduated from Vincennes High School in 1934. His high school yearbook had the caption under his name that said, “Listen have you heard the rumor, John is now a radio crooner.” In his childhood and youth, John lived in various communities where his father was the Presbyterian minister. He attended Vincennes Junior College for two years, then Purdue, and graduated from the University of Illinois. He had a teaching career from 1938 to 1980, teaching at various times both agriculture and science. For many years he taught 8th grade science at Northeastern High School, after moving to the Fountain City area in 1968. During World War II, his teaching career was interrupted by four years in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he taught for a year while training crews for PT boats at the naval base in Rhode Island. It was in Rhode Island that he met his first wife, Frances Marie Campanelli, whom he married in 1945. They were married for 37 years, until her death in 1982. In the Navy, John achieved the rank of lieutenant. After Rhode Island, he was an engineering officer of a crew on a repair ship, the USS Kermit Roosevelt, which traveled the Pacific from Pearl Harbor, Saipan, Okinawa, and the coast of China, while making repairs on various naval vessels. John married Winifred Lee in 1989. They were married for 24 years until her death in 2013. Since 1968 John has lived and farmed in the Fountain City area. John has been a member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond since 1970. His greatest joys have been his church, his family, farming, and gardening. Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl (Ed) Hinshaw of South Carolina; son, Rev. Dr. Dennis (Dr. Kelly) Andrews of Richmond; Winnie’s children, Jacky (Paul) Harman and Bryant (Jennifer) Lee; grandchildren, Jay (Chastity) Hinshaw, Tammy Hinshaw, Dr. Karen Andrews, Jennifer (Andrew) Blank, Jonathan Michael (Brittaney) Andrews, Amy Combs, and Emily Hernly; great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Mason Hinshaw, Carter and Camden Andrews, Lucy Blank, and Kendell and Marissa Combs; one sister, Bessie Hatton; sister-in-law, Ginny Andrews; nieces; nephews; and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Estelle Dick, Lois Casterline, and Charlotte Andrews; two brothers, Roger and Charles Andrews; and his former wives, Frances Andrews and Winifred Andrews. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 100 North 10th Street, Richmond at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, with Rev. Dr. Ronald Naylor officiating. The family will receive friends in the parlor following the service. Private burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
