Lillie Rawlings

RICHMOND, Ind. - Lillie Rawlings, age 70, of Richmond, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at her home. She was born October 21, 1939, in Rock Castle County, Ky., to Lewis and Bessie (Clark) Baker. Lillie is remembered as one who truly loved people - and her life is a testament to this fact. She was a loyal and loving wife to her husband John Franklin (who survives her and whom she married on July 20, 1961), a caring mother and friend to her children: Linda Sue Uphaus (Steve) of Centerville, Darrell Franklin Rawlings (Suzanne) of Richmond and Gregory Lee Rawlings (Jill) of Great Barrington, MA and a known 'spoiler' of her six grandchildren; Marissa, Christina and Chloe Uphaus as well as Aubrey, Jonathan and Michael Rawlings. Her love of people was not limited to her family as evidenced by her choosing a career as a nursing assistant, retiring from Reid Hospital after 33 years of caring for others. All those she came in contact with during her days at Reid knew her to be a very loving, kind and compassionate care giver, even being named Reid Ambassador of the month on a number of occasions. She showed her love of people by continuing to care for others after her retirement by working in home health through Senior Opportunity Services (SOS) as well as in private homes in and around Richmond. Lillie's love of people was also demonstrated through her faith as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was an active member of her congregation and enjoyed spending time speaking with others in the community about the blessings to be enjoyed under God's Kingdom. She often devoted more than 50 hours each month to her public preaching activity. Her strong faith and love of people kept her active in her ministry until the last weeks of her life. Lillie love to be outdoors; she loved planting and tending to her many beautiful flowers. She spent countless hours in her garden as she loved to be surrounded by the beauty found in God's creations. She loved her family very much and in addition to being survived by her husband John, her children and grandchildren, Lillie is also survived by her brothers; Earl Baker (Faye) of Broadhead, Ky and Donald Baker (Judy) of Williamsburg, In; sisters, Pearl Howard (Joe) and Opal VanWinkle both of Mt. Vernon, Ky, as well as Sarah Cox (Bud) of Richmond and Mandy Smith of London, Ky. Lillie was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Daisy Abney and Mary McClure and one brother, Garnett Baker. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
