Marie E. Houchin

RICHMOND, Ind. – Marie E. Houchin, age 90, of Richmond, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Reid Hospital. She was born June 14, 1924, in Clark County, Indiana, to Roy and Carrie Lewellen Matthews. Marie graduated from Milltown High School in 1942 and lived lived most of her life in Richmond, Indiana. She was a bookkeeper for Bruce AMC-Jeep, working side by side with her husband for 21 years. Marie won many national awards for her work as a bookkeeper, always striving for excellence. She was a very devoted and caring wife and mother, always making her family her number one priority in life. Marie was a lady of dedication, honesty, and foresight. She had many talents and enjoyed making beautiful quilts, crewel embroidery, afghans, draperies, and clothing for her family. Marie was an avid basketball fan and loved to watch Indiana University basketball and attend Richmond High School basketball games. Marie’s determination and will to live gave her many extra, wonderful years. She was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church and attended First Baptist Church of Richmond. Survivors include her daughter, Darlene Houchin of Richmond; niece, Donnita (Tim) Kelly of North Carolina; nephews, Gayle (Denise) Matthews of Richmond and Gary (Linda) Matthews of Indianapolis; many other nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Rhetta Mountjoy of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 67 years, Bruce A. Houchin who died April 11, 2012; son, Larry Houchin; parents, Roy and Carrie Lewellen Matthews; brothers, Donald Matthews and Glen Matthews; sister, Velma Miller; niece, Judy Vilhauer; sisters-in-law, Oleta Matthews Dubois and Thelma Matthews; brother-in-law, Edgar Miller; and many other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Visitation for Marie E. Houchin will be from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. James Spon officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
