Mildred Heinz Stewart

RICHMOND, Ind. – Mildred Heinz Stewart, age 101, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017, just weeks before her 102nd birthday. Born April 5, 1915, in Jamestown, Ohio, to Jacob and Blanche (Huffman) Heinz, Mildred had also resided in Columbus, Ohio, and Yardley, Pennsylvania. She and her beloved late husband, Wendell, came to live in Richmond 63 years ago. During those years, Mildred had been an active member and supporter of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, and was also a member of the Woman’s Club. She was a valued member of the Petal and Stem Garden Club in Richmond for six decades where she served as President many times through the years. The Garden Clubs of Indiana had recently named an academic scholarship in Mildred’s honor. Gardening was a true passion for her, winning multitudes of prizes for her flower arranging and plant specimens. In 1985, Mildred was bestowed the Honeywell Horticulture Award sponsored by Purdue University for excellence in the advancement of horticulture. Mildred will also be well remembered as a gourmet home cook by those fortunate to have sampled her culinary talents. She and Wendell traveled extensively throughout the world, visiting nearly every state in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, the Near East, and Australia. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Linda Stewart-Amy and her husband Stephen Amy of Smithfield, Virginia; son, Jonathan C. Stewart and his wife Tina Raham Stewart of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Laura Lynn Justice and Steven Farrington of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Maxine “Mickey” Heinz Craig of Westerville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Geneva Heinz of Jamestown, Ohio; nieces, Marcia Bell and her husband Greg Bell of Westerville, Ohio, Joy Little Tobias and her husband Jan of Waynesboro, Virginia, and Bonnie Heinz Weimar of Bowersville, Ohio; nephews, Roger Little and his wife Sally of St. Petersburg, Florida, Elden Heinz Jr. and his wife Irma, Larry Heinz and his wife Donna, and Ron Heinz, all of Jamestown, Ohio, Mark Craig of Defiance, Ohio, and Jay Warren Heinz and his wife Donna of Xenia, Ohio; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and their spouses and children; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Wendell F. Stewart, who died September 9, 2011; parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marlin Heinz and his wife Bernice Heinz, Elden Heinz Sr. and his wife Bernice Heinz, Kenneth Heinz and his wife Velma Heinz, and Floyd Heinz; and sister-in-law, Orsadee Little and her husband Fred Little. The family wishes to express their profound gratitude for the devoted and loving care Mildred received from her at-home caregivers, Jamie Terhaar, Annette Jones, Tammy Ramsey, Kara Flack, Jenny Strunk, and Lea Flack. Visitation for Mildred Heinz Stewart will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph T. Fields, Jr., M.Div. officiating. Entombment will be in Earlham Cemetery.
