Mildred L. Jurgens

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. – Mildred L. Jurgens, age 90, of Connersville, Indiana, died Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at Heritage House in Connersville. Born April 30, 1927, in Union County, Indiana, to Charles Perry and Sally Margaret Browning Ravencraft, Mildred lived in Centerville and Wayne County most of her life. She was one of 15 kids, including 3 sets of twins. Mildred graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1947. She married Aaron Jurgens on June 4, 1950. They had one daughter, Cindy. Mildred’s first job was at the Richmond Baking Company. She later worked at the Wayne County Auditor’s Office, Production Credit Association for 25 years, and Union County National Bank, until her retirement in 1997 on her 70th birthday. Mildred was a member of Central Christian Church in Richmond, since 1972, where she served on many committees, including the nominating committee and was the assistant treasurer and head of the food pantry. Mildred was an RSVP Volunteer and had given over 6,800 hours of her time. One of her favorite organizations to volunteer with was Sunrise, Inc., therapeutic riding for those with disabilities. Mildred was a Study Buddy for Richmond Community Schools. She also volunteered for Reid Health from 1997 – 2010, working as a mail courier and in the pharmacy and serving as an auxiliary board member. Mildred volunteered at the Centerville Senior Center for many years and served on the board as secretary. She also volunteered at Area 9 Council on Aging, where she was honored as the Volunteer of the Year in 2001 and received a plaque and dinner at the 2001 Indiana State Fair. Mildred volunteered at the Wayne County Tourism Board and for children’s events through the Richmond Parks Department. Mildred was an Election Day poll worker for many years. She bowled for many years on several bowling teams with her sisters and niece, Violet Hodgin, Mary Batcher, and Joan Hodgin Reising. She also bowled with her brother, Roy Ravencraft, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Virgil Batcher, and Brenda and Ron Chandler, for many years at 40 Lanes in the Tuesday Night Mixed League. For many years she also enjoyed going to dinner with her nephew, Bus and his wife Mary Lou Evans and played cards once a week. Mildred loved to play many types of card games, including Sheephead and Euchre. In 1999, she went to Hawaii with Cindy and Bryan. Mildred took a helicopter and submarine ride around Maui and learned how to snorkel. In 2003, she went skydiving at the Boston Airport and loved it. Mildred also went for a hot air balloon ride. She loved to travel and have fun. Mildred was known for her fried chicken and pies. Any excuse to bake a pie was good. Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Bryan) Metzger of Lafayette, Indiana; 303 Ravencraft nieces and nephews living all over the U.S. and Germany, including special nephew, Bus (Mary Lou) Evans; and sister-in-law, Barbara Ravencraft of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Aaron Jurgens, who died on August 22, 1975; parents; sisters, Dorothy Sharp, Mayme VanArsdall, Mary Batcher, Violet Hodgin, and Marilyn Bertsch; brothers, Johnnie, Robert Earl “Pete”, Roy, Russell, Orville, Charles “Chuck”, Leo, and Cleo Ravencraft and an unnamed baby at birth; and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Visitation for Mildred L. Jurgens will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Aaron Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearer is Marine Lance Corporal Cody Henwood, who is stationed in Japan.
