Nancy Terrell Brewster

Nancy Terrell Brewster, age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, Indiana. Born on a farm near New Vienna, Ohio, on June 8, 1925, to Gurney and Faith Austin Terrell, Nancy was a lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) community. A graduate of Wilmington College, she taught at Friends Boarding School, Locust Valley, New York and at Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio. Nancy completed a Master’s Degree in Library Science at University of Illinois Library School in 1952. During this time at U of I, she met and married Robert (Bob) Brewster. Upon moving to Richmond in 1958, Nancy and Bob joined West Richmond Friends Meeting and enjoyed being a part of the Earlham College community, where Bob taught German, while they raised their three sons. Nancy loved her work at Morrisson-Reeves Library and retired as head of cataloging in 1990. Nancy served on the Earlham Board of Trustees for nine years, the Earlham School of Religion Board of Advisors for nine years, and as clerk of the board. She was the first female clerk of West Richmond Friends Meeting, former member of Friends Fellowship Community Board of Directors, volunteered in the Whitewater Opera Company office, and was a founding member and first president of Friends of Morrisson-Reeves Library. Nancy enjoyed playing bridge and gardening, and she was an avid reader. Nancy’s intelligence, faith, strong spirit and love of literature, music and learning will be a constant legacy for those who knew her. Left to honor Nancy’s memory and remember her love are her three sons, Phil Brewster, Doug (Ed Martinez) Brewster of Oakland, California, and Greg (Geri Smith) Brewster of Evanston, Illinois; grandsons, Ben Brewster and Matthew Brewster, both of Evanston, Illinois; sister-in-law, Harriett Terrell of New Vienna, Ohio; nieces; nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Terrell; sisters, Pegs (Harry) Culbertson and Bliss (Steve) Wolff; and Bob Brewster. A memorial service will be held at West Richmond Friends Meeting, 609 West Main Street, Richmond, Indiana, on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Nancy’s name to the Earlham School of Religion, Attention: Jay Marshall, 228 College Avenue, Richmond, IN 47374 or www.esr.earlham.edu/support.
