Paul J. Herrman

RICHMOND, Ind. – Paul J. Herrman, age 92, of Richmond, Indiana, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Reid Health. Born May 20, 1925, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, to Edward H. and Louise Roell Herrmann, Paul was one of nine children. His last name was misspelled on his birth certificate, omitting the last ‘n’ in Herrmann; therefore, he and his family are the only ones who spell it as Herrman. Paul had lived in this community since 1936. He graduated from Centerville High School and attended Indiana State University and numerous automotive technical institutes. Paul was a WWII veteran, where he served as a construction equipment instructor in the Army Corps of Engineers. He worked in automotive service for many years and taught automotive mechanics at Richmond High School, retiring after 24 years. In retirement, Paul became an ardent wood carver, exhibiting his work at “Artistry in Wood” and other area shows and contributed to numerous causes. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Richmond Golden K Kiwanis Club and was a former member of the Hoosier Corners Square Dance Club and National Wood Carvers Association. Survivors include his two sons, Jim (Jo) Herrman of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Thom (Ann) Herrman of Richmond; two daughters, Patricia (Terry) Cornett of Liberty, Indiana, and Jeanne (Steve) Brown of Franklin, Indiana; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Edward (Jan) Herrmann, both of Richmond; two sisters, Catherine Norris of Richmond and Helen (Harold) Parks of Fredericktown, Ohio; sister-in-law, Sharon Herrmann of Eldorado, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, the former Mildred R. Phelps of Centerville, Indiana; parents; three brothers, Albert, Bernard, and Robert; one sister, Stella; and sisters-in-law, Helen (Bernard) and Donna (John). Visitation for Paul J. Herrman will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 815 West Main Street, Richmond. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Kevin Morris officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
