RICHMOND, Ind. – Philip Roland Hirschfeld, age 87, of Richmond, Indiana, died Monday, May 20, 2024, at home, surrounded by family. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7 Born March 31, 1937, in Richmond, Indiana, to Roland H. and Martha M. Ritz Hirschfeld, Philip was a life-long resident of Richmond. He was a graduate of Richmond High School. Philip began working at age nine, sacking potatoes at his father’s grocery store, then driving a bread truck for Richmond Baking Company when he was older. Philip had a long career in banking, working at Second National Bank for over 30 years, and retiring from the former Peoples Loan and Trust Bank as Executive Vice President. He served in the United States Army for two years, attended Richmond Business College, graduated from ABA Installment Lending School at the University of Chicago, ABA Commercial Lending School at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Virginia School of Banking, and Earlham Institute for Executive Growth. He was a lifetime member of the former St. John Lutheran Church until merging with St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Past President, past Treasurer, and sang in the church choir. Philip was a past Board member of the YMCA, United Way of Wayne County, Past Treasurer of Treaty Line Council of Girl Scouts, Past President of Wayne County Bowling Association, Lifetime member of Kiwanis Club of Richmond, having served as Treasurer for twenty-five years and Treasurer of Kiwanis Safety Village for seventeen years. Philip was Kiwanian of the year in 2009. His hobbies included bowling, having bowled two 300 games, and averaging 200 at age seventy; and golf, having scored one hole-in-one. Philip was elected to the Wayne County Bowling Hall of Fame. He and Janice had many friends, including four other couples who traveled together and had a long-standing tradition of getting together for Friday evening dinners. Philip and Janice were season ticket holders at all sporting events at the high school, beginning in the 1970’s. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Janice E. Tait Hirschfeld, to whom he was married on September 20, 1959; daughters, Julie E. (Terry) Garrett and Nancy A. (Tim) Short; grandchildren, Justin (Britta) Short, Ryan Short, Olivia Short, Shytana Garrett, and Michael Garrett; great-grandson, Wyatt Garrett; sister, Ruth Ann (Lowell) Burris; five nieces; cousins; and many friends. His family would like to give special thanks for the loving care Philip received at Reid Health from Dr. Bansal and the Oncology staff. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George Hirschfeld. Visitation for Philip Roland Hirschfeld will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. A time of visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. before the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 121 South 18th Street, Richmond, with Pastor Clifford Nunn officiating.
