Raymond C. Davis

RICHMOND, Ind. – Raymond C. Davis, age 91, of Richmond, died Thursday, October 27, 2016, at his home. Born January 3, 1925, in Union County, Indiana, to Thomas H. and Dessie Wade Davis, Ray lived in Greens Fork and Richmond for most of his life. He volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during W.W. II, including service in the China-Burma-India Theater, where he was awarded the bronze star medal, and served again during the Korean War. Ray graduated in 1943 from Clay Township High School in Greens Fork, Indiana, earned his bachelor’s degree in teaching from Earlham College, and his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Ball State University. He worked as a teacher and counselor for Richmond Community Schools, including at Riley, Highland, and Pleasant View schools, retiring in 1987. Ray was a member of West Richmond Friends Meeting, the ‘Supper Club’, Elks Lodge #649, YMCA Y’s Men, Richmond Classroom Teachers Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Friends of Morrisson-Reeves Library, and a founding member of Wayne Teachers Federal Credit Union. He was honored as a Master Cabinetmaker by the International Guild of Miniature Artisans. Survivors include his daughter, Adriene (Donald) Kalugyer of Greenwood, Indiana; grandchildren, Rachel (Tony) Beamon and Malcolm Kalugyer, both of Greenwood, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Emma and Nathan; sister-in-law, Willodean Smith Clinkenbeard; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Angae Lou Smith Davis, who died on August 20, 2013; parents; sisters, Lucille Fewell, Illene Haisley, Nell Ridge, and Phyllis Cheesman; brothers, Robert, Bill, and Herschel Davis; and seven nephews. Visitation for Raymond C. Davis will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 3, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Perry Anderson of Greenwood Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Greens Fork South Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
