Richard E. Baumgartner

RICHMOND, Ind. – Richard E. Baumgartner, age 85, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017, at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana. Dick was the son of Carl and Geraldine Stipp Baumgartner. He was born on August 15, 1931, in La Porte, Indiana, where he was a standout athlete in basketball, football, and track. Dick first met his wife of 65 years, Barbara Kimmel, in high school where he was also class president and she was secretary. He attended Indiana University on a full scholarship where he played basketball and ran track. Dick later went into the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri where he played basketball and coached football. This is where he first developed a love for coaching which led to 19 years of coaching high school basketball and teaching health and physical education. He was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame, nominated for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, invented the Sure Shot basketball shooting aid, authored several books and DVD’s on shooting, founded the Dick Baumgartner Basketball Shooting Camp, and instructed thousands of private shooting lessons for players all across the country. However, his true legacy lies in the countless lives he touched as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, teacher, and coach. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Baumgartner; daughter, Stacey (Jan) Dils of Richmond; sons, Rick (Pam) Baumgartner of Selma, Indiana, and Rhett (Kelly) Baumgartner of Richmond; grandchildren, Tarah Baumgartner of Prosper, Texas, Brice (fiancee, Brooke Poitivent and her daughter, Olive) Baumgartner of Van Alstyne, Texas, Lauren (Kraig) Gallagher of Fishers, Indiana, Kiersten Baumgartner of Fishers, Indiana, Austen (fiancee, Kyla) Baumgartner of Plainfield, Indiana, Ryan (Amber) Baumgartner of Fortville, Indiana, Heather (Stephen Honn) Baumgartner of Fortville, Indiana, and Ella (Daniel) Monaghan of Richmond; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and Blakely Baumgartner and Hudson Gallagher; and brother, Rod (Mary) Baumgartner of Bloomfield, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pat Bernacchi; and brother, Duane Baumgartner. Visitation for Richard E. Baumgartner will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Brett Karanovich officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
