Richard R. 'Dick' Horn

RICHMOND, Ind. – Richard R. ‘Dick’ Horn, age 90, of Richmond, died Friday, May 27, 2016, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born November 16, 1925, in Coal City, Indiana, to Roy F. and Catherine Elizabeth Steiner Horn, Richard lived much of his life in this community. He was a 1943 graduate of Jefferson Township High School and a1950 graduate of Indiana University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Richard did his graduate work at the University of Colorado and Wisconsin University, receiving his master’s degree in 1953. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII and received a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with six bronze stars. Richard taught in Paoli, Indiana, from 1949 to 1952 and in Richmond at Nicholson School from 1952 to1959. He worked as principal at four elementary schools, including Warner and Findley Elementary Schools from 1965 to 1972, Vaile Elementary School from 1972 to 1980, and Westview Elementary School from 1980 to 1986, retiring in June of 1986. Richard was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club of Richmond, Indiana, American Legion Post #315 of Richmond, Indiana, member and past president of the Indiana and Wayne County Retired Teachers Associations, and 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #119 in Paoli, Indiana. Richard volunteered at Reid Hospital, the Richmond Rose Garden, and as a mail carrier, acquiring over 1500 hours of service. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Elementary Principal Award of District 10 in 1985, and was recognized with the Legion of Honor Award for 50 years of membership from the Kiwanis Club of Richmond, Indiana. Richard enjoyed fishing, gardening, wood crafting, and playing bridge. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Kate Toppin Horn, to whom he was married on April 3, 1953; daughter, Susan E. (Scott) McConnell of Williamsburg, Indiana; son, John M. Horn of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Mitchell R. McConnell of Williamsburg, Indiana, Cory S. (Teresa) McConnell of Hartford City, Indiana, and Stacey J. (Brian) Romine of Lima, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Nolan, Ian, and Christian McConnell and Raegan and Jacob Romine; nieces, Ellen (Gregg) Osborn of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Dorinda (Ernie) Halaxa of Dublin, California; nephews, Thomas (Jackie) Barnes of Grayling, Michigan, Steven Watters of Williamsburg, Virginia, John Watters of Williamsburg, Virginia, Myron (Cindy) Schroer of Brentwood, California, and Donald Schroer of Tucson, Arizona; great-nieces; great-nephews; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elsie Ruth Schroer. Visitation for Richard R. ‘Dick’ Horn will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Ream officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City, Indiana with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
