RICHMOND, Indiana - Tomas Reyes, age 76, of Richmond (‘Fine’, ‘Papi’ to his children, ‘Lilo’ to his 3 oldest grandchildren or ‘Lelo’ to the 2 youngest), went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Reid Health. He was born August 10, 1939, in Jovellanos, Provincia de Matanzas, Cuba, to Antonio Reyes and Rosa Angelica Falcon de Reyes. After being captured trying to escape communist Cuba and in order to escape further incarceration, in 1966, Tomas came to the United States via a ‘Freedom Flight’ arranged by the Catholic Church. Fine retired to Richmond 12 years ago. He was a graduate of Felix Varela Catholic School in Colon, Matanzas, Cuba. Prior to his retirement, Fine worked in the automotive industry in Miami, Florida for many years. He was a loving and caring husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, in-law and friend. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, with all of his heart. Above all, he was a selfless, giving person and who always found a special way to make those around him happy. Tomas loved to laugh, joke, be a prankster and play dominoes. He was always tinkering around the house and yard and loved to consume himself in endless remodeling projects around the house. He was the most amazing grandfather to all 5 of his grandchildren. He devoted countless time to dropping them off or picking them up from school, puttering around the yard with them, planting flowers, raking and painting bird houses with them, and most importantly, loving them. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maritza Ortega Reyes; children, Damaris Reyes-Kassens, Jocelyn Wilson (Howard A. Wilson Jr.) and Gabriel Michael Reyes; five grandchildren, Angelica Marie Trunzo, Kaitlyn Nicole Reyes-Kassens, Cristian Philip Kassens, Tommy Wilson, and Sophia Josy Wilson; siblings, Antonia Ramona ‘Mirella’, Jose Manuel ‘Manolo’, Valentin Martin, Dora Consuelo ‘Dora’, Justo Alberto ‘Caruso’, Sarah ‘Ruma’, Aleido and Mercedes ‘Mercy’; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Antonio Manuel ‘Manolo’ Reyes and Santi Reyes; sister, Migdalia Reyes; and another infant sibling. Tomas’ greatest pleasure in life was giving of himself and his time to his family. He played many roles in the lives of his children and grandchildren and their lives are forever changed without him and the void can never be filled. Visitation for Tomas Reyes will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3469 Hillcrest Road, Richmond, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, also at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Pastor Marty Holman officiating. Papi spent many years fundraising for the Diabetes Research Institute.
