Wilford E. Engle

RICHMOND, Ind. – Wilford E. Engle, age 93, of Richmond, Indiana, died Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Reid Health surrounded by family. Born January 22, 1930, in Indian Creek in Knox County, Kentucky, to Virgil and Jeffie Smith Engle, Wilford had lived in Richmond more than 65 years. He was a factory worker for Johns Manville for 33 years and was also proficient in carpentry and electrical work. Survivors include his daughters, Linda Smith of Richmond, Sheila Bryson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Holly Devers of Richmond; sons, Larry (Eileen) Engle of Virginia, Roger Engle of Tehachapi, California, Phil Engle of Richmond, and Mark (Jennifer) Engle of Richmond; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Shores Engle on June 15, 2013; parents; son, Terry Engle; one great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; and siblings, Arnold, Pauline, Ray, Glen, Lucille, and Clyde. Funeral services for Wilford E. Engle will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. The following is a goodbye letter from his grandson, Dustin Engle. This exemplifies the family’s sentiments: “Letter to My Papaw – He was a lot of things to a lot of people. A hardworking tradesman, a loving husband, father, and to me an amazing grandfather. But I know one lesson papaw would want to leave with us. We all know how hard he worked to provide for his family. He voiced to some of us that he wished he had worked less and spent more time with Mamaw. So, what I take from that is, don’t get caught up in this world. All the work and all the money we make can be gone in an instant. What really matters is our family, friends, and all the people we hold close in our hearts. After all, in this world what more do we really have?
