Charles E. Cain

RICHMOND, Ind. - Charles E. Cain, age 80, of Richmond, died Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Reid Hospital. Born April 1, 1930, in Hagerstown, Ind. to Marfield and Piccola Doddridge Cain, he spent most of his life in Wayne County. He was a 1948 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Charlie was a 1952 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received his Masters Degree in 1953. While at Washington University he was an outstanding basketball player, was the school's scoring leader for 50 years and was inducted into the Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame. He also attended Ball State University. Charlie taught and coached both basketball and a state championship tennis team at Ladue High School, Ladue, Missouri. He taught and served as an Administrator at Hagerstown High School from 1965 to 1974 and finished his teaching career at Union High School in Modoc, Ind. where he retired in 1992. Charlie was employed by Miller Corp. in Cambridge City, Ind. from 1974 to 1980. He was a former member of the Hagerstown Rotary Club. Charlie was an avid golfer, veracious reader and St. Louis Cardinal and I.U. basketball fan. Survivors include his daughters, Sally Stohler of Hagerstown and Barbara Reed of Las Vegas, Nevada; son Bruce Cain of Groton, Mass.; two step-daughters, Kristy Lynn (Dave) Bloss of Texas and Kelly Jo (Gary) Autry of Greenfield, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Donna K. Anderson Cain. The family invites anyone wanting to share memories of Charlie to a reception from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at Congregational Christian Church, 201 South Washington, Hagerstown, IN 47346.
