Chesley Hoyatt Ellis

RICHMOND, Ind. - Chesley Hoyatt Ellis, age 82, of Richmond, Indiana, died Friday, April 21, 2017, at Reid Health. Born December 7, 1934, in McCreary County, Kentucky, to John Vander and Zora Flynn Ellis, Hoyatt was a 1953 graduate of the first class of Union Township High School. He also graduated from barber school in 1953. Hoyatt entered into military service with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954, served various roles, and retired from the U.S. Army as MSG. He had lived in Richmond since 1968. Hoyatt was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Losantville Masonic Lodge #674 F.& A.M. He enjoyed motor homing, spending several winters in the south; rode regularly with the Seniors on Scooters; and loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Hazel Irene Vaughn Ellis; daughters, Gina (Ron) Downing of Farmland, Indiana; Debbie (Bruce Sr.) Dotts of Kansas, and Brenda (John) Frame of Indianapolis, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Jarod, Tyler, Mallory, Bruce Jr., Andrew, Amanda, Johnny, and Ellis; great-granddaughter, Elaina; sisters, Glenna (Charlie) Klingel and Janice (Bob) Stephenson, both of Muncie, Indiana; brother, Lowell Ellis of Parker City, Indiana; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Zora Leggett; father, John Vander Ellis; son-in-law, Steven Smith; and sister, Adeline Cassel. Visitation for Chesley Hoyatt Ellis will be from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 East Main Street, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Central United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Ream officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie, Indiana. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
