David Lee Ashcraft

David Lee Ashcraft, age 71, of Richmond, Indiana, died Thursday, October 26, 2023, at AMG Specialty Hospital in Muncie, Indiana, surrounded by family. Born in March of 1952, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to I. Lee and Jean C. Carlton Ashcraft, David lived in Richmond for over 20 years. He was an extremely intelligent man who enjoyed writing and spent much of his spare time reading, often reading 15 books per month. David loved to hike and canoe, and he loved his dogs and just spending time in the great outdoors. In mid-life he returned to school and earned his Master of Divinity which he used to give services at various churches, and he served as chaplain at the Richmond State Hospital. David had survived stage 4 cancer 12 years ago. David was a quiet man with a clever wit who cared very much about human rights. He specifically cared about equality for all people and taught his daughters to appreciate and respect themselves and others. David loved being in nature and won Donna’s heart with his extensive knowledge. He was cherished by his wife Donna, and often had many pets fighting over who was going to sit on his lap. Above all else, David loved his family. When his mother in Cincinnati was dying, he went every week to visit and spend the day caring for her. Near the end of her life, when she was in hospice care, we went daily just to be with her. You have only to meet his three daughters to know they were raised with loving care. David’s was a life well lived. Survivors include his wife, Donna Ashcraft to whom he was married for 12 years; three daughters, Jessica (Charles) Stewart of Hamilton, Ohio, Megan Ashcraft of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Amy Ashcraft of Cincinnati, Ohio; two stepchildren, Sabrina Wood and Seth Wood of Richmond, Indiana; granddaughter, Stephanie Boling of Hamilton, Ohio; sister, Vivian (Frank Cereceres) Ashcraft of Glenmont, Ohio; stepfather, Jim Edwards of Cincinnati; and niece, Erin Young of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Ashcraft; father, I. Lee Ashcraft; and brother, Michael Ashcraft. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at AMG Specialty Hospital for the excellent care given to David. Visitation for David Lee Ashcraft will be from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2023, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2023, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home. A Dedication for David will be held on a later date at St. John Unitarian Universalist Church, 320 Resor Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio.
