Duane Markley

RICHMOND, Ind. – Duane Markley, age 84, of Richmond, passed away at his home Friday, October 11, 2013. He was born in Richmond on May 1, 1929, to Raymond and Elmyra Markley. Duane graduated from Richmond High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 as a Quarter-Master Petty Officer Third Class Helmsman on the U.S.S. Sarda submarine. On February 28, 1953, he married Annabel H. Nocke of Elkton, Maryland. He retired after 36 years from Wayne Dairy. He also worked for Bank One and High Security Storage in Richmond, Indiana. Duane was an avid sports lover. He lettered in baseball, basketball, and football at RHS. He was offered a full scholarship to play basketball and football at High Point University in North Carolina. The year after his high school basketball team went to the semi-state finals, he was picked up by the Boston Braves baseball club, where he pitched for three seasons for the Braves minor league farm team. In 1948 he joined the House of David professional basketball team. After leaving the House of David, he joined Minot, an independent professional basketball team out of North Dakota. While a submariner in the Navy, he was chosen to play on the All-Star Softball team. In 1951 he led his team to victory at the Atlantic Fleet Softball Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia. In his later years he enjoyed bowling and golf. In 1981 he won the Richmond City Tournament ‘A’ Flight Championship. He continued supporting local sports by officiating basketball and baseball. He is survived by his wife, Ann, and four children, Stephen Markley and Craig Markley of Richmond, Melissa Ricks of Houston, Texas, and Jennifer Burch of New Paris, Ohio. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael Burch, Lindsay Burch, Annalyn Markley, Claire Ricks, and Alexander Markley; and his niece, Joan Mathew of Plano, Texas. His father, mother, and sister, Barbara Davis, preceded him in death. There will be a private service and burial for the immediate family.
