Glen Alan Spears

RICHMOND, Ind. – Glen Alan Spears, age 79 of Richmond, Indiana passed away Friday, October 12, 2007. He was born May 21, 1928 in Richmond, Indiana to the late Glen O. Spears and Katherine Managan Spears. He was a life-long resident of Richmond. Glen graduated from Richmond High School in 1947 and was the Sports Editor on the staff of The Register student newspaper. He served in the United States Army from 1950 until he was honorably discharged in 1956 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He married Jewell King in 1955. They had five children. Upon his return from the service, he worked for the United States Postal Service until he retired in 1988. He was a member of several community organizations including the Starr-Gennett Foundation, Richmond Art Museum, Friends of Morrisson-Reeves Library, Wayne County Historical Museum, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, the NAACP, the Jazz Record Collectors Association, and Townsend Community Center. He was also a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and served on its Nominating Committee. He enjoyed studying local history, was an avid reader and amateur jazz historian, and was credited on the 1998 album Lena Horne: A Musical Anthology. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jewell Spears; son and daughter-in-law Alan and Donna Spears of Richmond, IN; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Ronnie Dickson of Oakland, CA; daughter and son–in-law Amy Spears and Barry Barker of Fort Wayne, IN; daughters Sonya Spears of Oakland, CA and Sheila Spears of Richmond, IN; half-sister Barbara Spears and half-brother Darnell Spears; sisters-in-law Betty King of Gary, IN and Thalia King of Elgin, IL; brothers-in-law Charles I. King of Hamilton, OH and Robert Briggs of Dayton, OH; cousins Bonnie Turner of Cleveland, OH and Dwight Jones of Chicago, IL; friends Robert and Connie Vanlandingham of Fort Wayne, IN; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. Funeral services for Glen Alan Spears will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1004 North A Street, Richmond, Indiana with the Reverend David Good officiating. Burial will be at Earlham Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Wayne County Memorial Honor Guard.
