John Bastin

John Bastin RICHMOND, Ind. - John Bastin, age 89, of Richmond, died Friday, July 2, 2010, at Reid Hospital. Born January 3, 1921, in Paragon, Indiana to John and Lillie Jane Lewis Bastin. John was a 1938 graduate of Paragon High School. He received his bachelors degree in 1948 and masters degree in 1951 both from Indiana University. He received his Public School Superintendent's License from Indiana University in 1954. John served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, having been stationed in Italy as a Bombardier on the B-24 aircraft, assigned to the 15th Air Force, 455 Bomb Group, 742 Bomb Squadron flying 49 missions. He would later retire as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He had been President of the IHSAA Council during the 1969-1970 school year. John was a teacher and basketball coach at Hebron, Monticello, LaPorte and Richmond, Indiana. He was Assistant Principal at Union High School at Modoc and retired in 1985 as Assistant Principal of Centerville High School. He was a 50 year member of Masonic Grand Lodge F&A.M. of Hebron, Indiana, Lodge #502 and was Past Chancellor Commander Hebron Knights of Pythias Lodge. John was a Life Member of the Air Force Reserve Officers Association and the Indiana University Alumni Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond and served on the Board of Deacons and on the Board of Elders. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara A. Bastin; two daughters, Jill Bastin and Amy Grant and her husband Kent all of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren, Angela Kessler, Joe Kessler, Matt Kessler, Michelle Kessler, Garrett Grant and Kelsie Grant; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight older sisters. Visitation for John Bastin will be from 4-7 pm, Tuesday, July 6th, 2010, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 7th at First Presbyterian Church, 100 North 10th St., Richmond, with Pastor David A. Layman officiating.
