John C. Delamater

CARMEL, Ind. - John C. Delamater, age 89, of Carmel, Indiana, died Monday, July 22, 2013, after a brief hospitalization. Born December 16, 1923, in the Chicago area, John's mother and father, Celia Clark Delamater and Harrison Ray Delamater, moved to Richmond in 1925. John's family bought a house at 520 S. 15th Street, where his mother and father resided for the rest of their lives. John graduated from Richmond High School in 1942 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the Navy, John attended Purdue University where he studied engineering. After college, John accepted a position that provided the opportunity for him to live in Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. In the late 1940’s John returned to Richmond and was employed at the Richmond Fireproof Door Company. In 1951 John met Mary Langan of Irvine, Kentucky, while she was working as a teacher with the Richmond Public Schools. The two married on December 23, 1951, and moved to Florida in the summer of 1952. In late 1957 John and family moved to Indianapolis where he took a job at Engineered and Metal Products. John was an avid sports and performance car enthusiast his entire life. In 1962 John and four other men founded the Ferrari Club of America. He remained active with club events until his passing. In 1973 John went into business for himself as a broker of vintage and collector sports cars. He continued working in this capacity until a few years ago. John, his wife Mary, and their two children were members of University Park Christian Church where John was always active with church activities and projects. John is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, who died March 13, 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Delamater Bonhomme (Fred Bonhomme) of Indianapolis, Indiana; son Mark Delamater (Tracy Roseberry Delamater) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and granddaughter, Isabella Delamater. There is a small service open to those who knew John at the Chapel in Earlham Cemetery, Saturday July 27, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Indianapolis.
