Lorraine E. Mills

Former Richmond resident Lorraine E. Mills, age 90, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Elmcroft of Muncie, where she had resided since May of 2007. Born Dec. 22, 1918, in Richmond, Indiana, to Walter and Reva Chenoweth Chapman, she graduated from Morton High School in 1936. Lorraine was married to Robert C. Mills in 1951 and they enjoyed 43 years of living and traveling together before he died. Bob’s employment with North American Van Lines gave them occasion to stay in Europe for several months as well as live in a variety of places that included Portland, Oregon, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hayward, California, San Gabriel, California, and Evansville, Indiana. They returned to Richmond in 1985 to retire. Lorraine’s employment included secretarial, accounting, and inventory control responsibilities. One of her first positions was with Richmond Baking Co. She also enjoyed a position as assistant to the drug buyer for Meyers Drug Co. of Fort Wayne. In Fort Wayne, she and Bob were charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church, a mission church at which she played the piano and sang in the choir. Upon their return to Richmond, they became members of First English Lutheran Church, where they attended regularly until their deaths. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Morris and her husband, Jim of Coffeyville, KS; stepson, Robert Cecil Mills of Slatington, PA; stepdaughter, Kathy Mills Allen of San Jose, CA; four grandchildren, Julie Mullins and her husband, Joe of Muncie, Ted Humphrey of Plainfield, IL, Chris Curro of New York, and Ben Humphrey of Bloomington, IN; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, Sean Mullins of Seattle, WA, Jennifer Mullins of Muncie, Laura Humphrey of Columbus, OH, and Paul Humphrey of Pickerington, OH; one brother, Lee Chapman and his wife, Helen of Paradise, CA; four nieces, Joy Chapman-Pinheiro, Diane Boka, Linda Ramirez, and Sheila Gordon, all residing in CA; and she also leaves behind many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30th, at First English Lutheran Church, 2727 National Road East, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor John Walker and Pastor Brian Derrer officiating. Burial will follow at Earlham Cemetery.
