Margaret S. Oughton

RICHMOND, Ind. – Margaret S. Oughton, age 91, of Richmond, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ, Wednesday, August 28, 2013, after a short stay in the hospital. Born January 4, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Edwyn L. and Marie Morris Shoemaker, she spent most of her life in her homes in Cheltenham and the Poconos. Margaret was married to George W. Oughton, who preceded her to heaven in 1999. She married just prior to her husband serving in World War II, where he was a prisoner of war for 2 ½ years in Poland. Margaret showed great faithfulness and stamina in waiting for him and sending him as many packages as she was allowed. She raised two children, George and Lynda, and was a true helpmate who helped her husband for over 20 years build a second home on the lake each weekend, where the family also vacationed. This home was the sanctuary and blessing for the entire family and shaped their lives and love of the water and mountains. She, like her mother before her, was very capable in sewing crafts. She knew how to sew, knit, crochet, needlepoint, and cross stitch. A few of her handmade items are still family treasures. She even taught knitting to high school girls where her children went to school at Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian Academy. She was always a proponent of higher education and sought out this school to prepare her children for college. She moved to Richmond in 1997 with her husband to be near her daughter for assistance with his failing health. She always professed that Jesus Christ was her savior. Survivors include her daughter, Lynda Dean and son-in-law, Steven Dean; her step-granddaughter, Christina Poynter, her husband, Bradley Poynter and great-granddaughter, Hailey Poynter; brother, Edwyn Shoemaker; nephews, John and Tom Shoemaker and families; her son, George Oughton Jr.; and grandsons, Christopher and Jamison Oughton. Visitation for Margaret S. Oughton will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at First Assembly of God Church, 315 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church with Rev. Carlos King officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
